Astronomy events in 2020
I've compiled this page following my presentation at NASTRO in January 2000. It isn't a comprehensive list - just things which should be visible from Northumberland!
Visibility of the planets
This is an elongation chart showing the positions of the bright planets relative to the Sun in 2020. Places where lines intersect correspond to planetary conjunctions. I'll discuss some of best shortly!
February: Mercury and Venus in the evening sky
A great opportunity - the first of two - to spot the two innermost planets in the evening sky.
Venus is a very obvious brilliant star in the western sky immediately after sunset.
Mercury is not so bright and closer to the horizon. It is typically visible about 45 minutes after sunset but the planet itself will set after another half an hour or so.
The two planets will have a closer encounter in the evening sky during May.
